ADHD

ADHD is one of the most common and most misunderstood mental health conditions in both children and adults. It is not a lack of willpower or discipline. It is a difference in how the brain manages attention, impulses, and motivation.

Whether you were diagnosed years ago, suspect you have been living with undiagnosed ADHD, or are worried about your child, the right care can change what feels possible.

You deserve care, and you deserve the best care. At Mind Oak Psychiatry, our board-certified psychiatric nurse practitioner delivers expert, personalized ADHD evaluation and treatment.

What is ADHD?

Understanding ADHD

ADHD can feel like having a browser with fifty tabs open and no way to close them. Important tasks slip away while your attention locks onto something else entirely. Deadlines arrive like ambushes. You start ten things and finish none, then lie awake replaying everything you dropped.

For others, ADHD looks quieter: drifting off in meetings, rereading the same page three times, being called “spacey” or “lazy” by people who never saw how hard you were actually trying.

ADHD is not a character flaw. It is a well-studied, highly treatable condition. With an accurate diagnosis and the right treatment plan, most people experience real, measurable improvement in focus, follow-through, and daily life.

When To Seek Help For ADHD

Recognizing the signs and knowing when support can help

If distraction, disorganization, impulsivity, or restlessness are affecting your work, school, relationships, or self-esteem, an evaluation is worth your time. Many adults reach us after years of workarounds that no longer work, or after a child’s diagnosis prompts them to recognize the same patterns in themselves.

What to expect: ADHD treatment at Mind Oak Psychiatry begins with a thorough diagnostic evaluation. We take this step seriously because ADHD shares symptoms with anxiety, depression, sleep disorders, and other conditions, and an accurate diagnosis is what makes treatment work.

Types Of ADHD

Difficulty sustaining attention, following through on tasks, staying organized, and keeping track of details, without prominent hyperactivity. This presentation is frequently missed, especially in girls, women, and adults, because it looks like daydreaming rather than disruption. It responds well to treatment once identified.

Restlessness, fidgeting, difficulty staying seated or waiting your turn, interrupting, and acting before thinking. In adults, hyperactivity often turns inward and shows up as inner restlessness, impatience, or a constant need to be busy. Treatment helps most people gain meaningful control over impulsivity.

The most common form of ADHD, involving significant symptoms of both inattention and hyperactivity-impulsivity. Because it touches so many areas of life, combined ADHD can feel overwhelming, but it is just as treatable as the other presentations.

ADHD does not appear in adulthood, but it is very often first recognized there. Adults may have spent decades compensating through effort, intelligence, or rigid routines until life demands outgrew those strategies. It is never too late to be evaluated, and adults respond well to treatment.

Treatment Modalities

How we treat adhd

Mind Oak Psychiatry provides psychiatric evaluation and medication management for ADHD, with supportive therapy and practical skills built into every visit. Depending on your needs, your care may include:

  • Comprehensive diagnostic evaluation. A structured assessment that distinguishes ADHD from conditions that mimic it, and identifies co-occurring conditions such as anxiety or depression, which are common alongside ADHD.
  • Medication management. Medication is the most effective single treatment for ADHD symptoms in most people. We select, monitor, and adjust medication carefully, with regular follow-up to make sure it is working for your life, not just your symptoms. (Verify and state the practice’s policy on stimulant prescribing via telehealth before publishing.)
  • Supportive therapy with CBT-informed strategies. Incorporated into medication visits when clinically appropriate: practical work on planning, time management, and the self-criticism that builds up after years of undiagnosed struggle.
  • Psychoeducation and lifestyle support. Understanding your ADHD, plus sleep, routine, and coping strategies that help medication work better.
  • Treatment of co-occurring conditions. Anxiety, depression, and sleep problems frequently travel with ADHD, and leaving them untreated undermines ADHD treatment.
  • Referral for ongoing psychotherapy or coaching. Patients who need weekly therapy or intensive executive-function coaching are referred to trusted providers while continuing medication management with us.
